Sector-specific risks of modern slavery

The manufacturing sector

Modern slavery risks are embedded across multiple tiers of manufacturing supply chains, from raw material extraction to final production. Risks are particularly acute in labour-intensive and lower-margin sectors such as agriculture and agri-processing, construction materials, mining, electronics, and textiles, where reliance on migrant or temporary workers and complex subcontracting chains reduce transparency and oversight. Cost pressures, tight deadlines, hazardous conditions, and weak worker voice heighten vulnerability to recruitment debt, excessive overtime, wage withholding, unsafe work, and limited access to effective grievance mechanisms.

The financial sector

Although not directly involved in production, the financial sector is interlinked with numerous industries, making it vulnerable to modern slavery through indirect exposure. Financial institutions can face risks through investments, lending, ownership stakes, and procurement practices that rely on complex global supply chains. Additionally, services such as debt collection, asset management, and private equity may inadvertently enable or benefit from forced labour if due diligence mechanisms are weak.

The hospitality sector

Modern slavery within hospitality can take many forms, including forced labour, debt bondage, and human trafficking. The sector’s complex procurement practices, multilayered subcontracting, and reliance on outsourced and seasonal labour create significant vulnerabilities. Risks arise not only in front-line roles such as cleaners and kitchen staff, but also in construction projects linked to hotel development and refurbishment, as well as in the sourcing of goods such as food, textiles, and amenities. The industry also faces heightened risks of sexual exploitation and trafficking connected to tourism operations.

Modern Slavery Baseline Assessment

Modern Slavery Baseline Assessment

The Modern Slavery Baseline Assessment (MSBA), developed by The Mekong Club, is a crucial tool for organisations looking to improve their understanding of internal practices, meet compliance requirements, and establish themselves as leaders in anti-slavery and social sustainability efforts within their industries.

Developed by a team of international experts, the MSBA evaluates your internal capacity to assess and respond to modern slavery risks in alignment with internationally recognised frameworks: the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, (CSRD), the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).

The MSBA is also accessible to non-members, at a competitive rate. It offers a practical starting point for transforming commitment into meaningful, measurable change.
